Theodore Striker, MD

Theodore “Ted” Striker, MD, died in his sleep on Oct. 17, 2021, at the age of 85. Striker was a pioneer in pediatric anesthesiology, helping to launch one of the most progressive departments of pediatric anesthesiology at Cincinnati Children’s with Nelson Melampy, MD, in 1968.

Striker attended Dartmouth for his undergraduate work and the University of Cincinnati for his medical degree. His internship, residency and fellowship in anesthesia were spent at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, followed by two years in the Department of Anesthesia at the National Institutes of Health, and his return to Cincinnati Children’s. He served as associate director of Anesthesiology, acting director, and anesthesiologist-in-chief at Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

He played a role in developing policies and procedures on a national level to improve pediatric perioperative care. He was also a member of the initial board of directors for the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia when it was established in 1986.

Striker was a beloved leader, mentor, colleague, and friend who lived his life with integrity, honesty, and curiosity. He built a diverse and talented department that will carry on his legacy of hard work, joyful practice, and respect for all.
