Paul Perlstein, MD

Paul Perlstein, MD, a neonatologist, passed away on Nov 9, 2021, at the age of 84 years after a long battle with cancer.

Perlstein trained at the University of Utah School of Medicine, did an internship at Cook County in Chicago, and completed his residency and fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s.

In the 1960s, Perlstein led a team of physicians and engineers from the medical center and the University of Cincinnati in developing Alcyon, a computerized system that continuously monitored vital functions and controlled the incubator environment of newborns in the intensive care unit. By the 1970s, with these computerized incubators, Cincinnati Children’s and General Hospital had the most technologically sophisticated newborn intensive care units in the world.

Perlstein enjoyed a productive career at Cincinnati Children’s and UC that spanned many years and gave countless children a better start at life.
